New Grad Nurse Resume: Examples, Clinicals and Skills

No RN job yet? A new grad nurse resume puts license or NCLEX status in line one, lists clinical rotations like jobs, and treats your capstone as your strongest experience.

Key takeaways

  • On a new grad nurse resume, license status goes in line one: RN license number if issued, “NCLEX-RN passed, license pending” or “NCLEX-RN scheduled [Month Year]” if not.
  • Don’t put “RN” after your name until the license is issued. Recruiters check.
  • Education sits above experience for now, and clinical rotations get their own section with unit, site and hours.
  • Your capstone or preceptorship is your strongest evidence. Write it like a job, and be exact about supervision.
  • BLS goes in a certifications section with its expiry date. List ACLS only if you hold it or have a course date.

A new grad nurse resume gets read for eligibility before anything else: are you licensed, when did you graduate, and where have you actually worked on a unit. Without an RN job yet, your clinical rotations and capstone do the work that job history does on everyone else’s resume. Below is the order that works, with bullets you can adapt. If you’d rather edit a finished draft, the graduate nurse resume template is built in this order.

Put your license or NCLEX status in the first line

Nurse residency programs and new grad hiring teams sort by license status first, because it decides your start date and what you can do on the unit. Say exactly where you are. A vague “RN candidate” makes the reader guess, and most won’t.

Where you areWhat to write in line one
LicensedRN, [State] license #[number], issued [Month Year]
Passed, waiting on the boardNCLEX-RN passed [Month Year]; [State] RN license pending
Exam bookedNCLEX-RN scheduled [Month Year]; [BSN / ADN] graduate [Month Year]
Still in school[BSN / ADN] expected [Month Year]; NCLEX-RN planned [Month Year]
State-issued temporary permitGraduate Nurse permit, [State], #[number] (only if your state issues one)

Your name line follows the same rule. “Jordan Lee, BSN” is right until the license is issued. “Jordan Lee, BSN, RN” before then is a claim the recruiter can check with a quick search of the state board’s license lookup. If you hold a multistate license under the Nurse Licensure Compact, say so, because it tells a hospital near a state line that you can work either side.

Screener tipSome employers have a formal route for the gap between graduating and licensure. One VA transition-to-practice posting we read allowed unlicensed graduates to start as a Graduate Nurse Technician on a 120-day temporary appointment while pursuing licensure. Routes like this vary by employer and state, so ask the recruiter rather than assuming one exists.

Education goes above experience, for now

On a working nurse’s resume, education sits near the bottom. On yours it goes directly under the summary, because it’s the eligibility check the reader is making. Include the degree, the school, the graduation date and the program’s accreditation (ACEN or CCNE). Add honors and a GPA only when they help: a 3.7 is worth a line, a 3.1 isn’t.

BeforeNursing degree, State University, 2026
AfterBachelor of Science in Nursing, [State University], [CCNE]-accredited, [May 2026]. Nursing GPA [3.7]; [Dean’s list, 4 semesters].

Once you’ve worked a year as an RN, move education back down. The order changes when your evidence changes.

Clinical rotations are your experience

Give your rotations their own section titled “Clinical experience” and list them like jobs: unit type, hospital, hours. A hiring manager for a med-surg residency scans for med-surg hours. If they’re buried inside a paragraph under education, the scan misses them.

RotationSiteHours
Capstone preceptorship, medical-surgical[Hospital], [32]-bed unit[144]
Medical-surgical[Hospital][90]
Maternity and obstetrics[Hospital][60]
Pediatrics[Children’s hospital][60]
Psychiatric and mental health[Behavioral health center][45]

Put the capstone first and the rest in order of relevance to the job, not in the order you did them. Applying to a pediatric residency? Pediatrics moves up to second place. Under the two or three rotations that matter most for this posting, add one or two bullets each. The rest can stand as a single line.

Every bullet from school has to be honest about supervision. Your clinical instructor or preceptor held accountability for the patient, and experienced nurses reading your resume know that. Writing as if you practiced alone doesn’t make you look stronger. It makes you look like you don’t understand scope.

New grad nurse resume bullets: capstone, preceptorship and extern

Your capstone is the closest thing you have to an RN job: one preceptor, a near-full assignment, the whole shift from report to handoff. Write it with the most detail. For more on building bullets from scratch, see how to write resume bullet points.

Capstone or preceptorship

  • Finished [144] capstone hours on [Hospital]’s [32]-bed [medical-surgical] unit, paired with one RN preceptor for every shift.
  • Carried [4 to 5] patients per shift by the final two weeks, with the preceptor keeping accountability for all care.
  • Ran the shift from bedside report to handoff, giving SBAR reports that the oncoming nurse accepted without changes.
  • Taught [6] discharging patients a week their medications and warning signs, confirming understanding by teach-back while the preceptor observed.
  • Recognized a change in a patient’s [respiratory status] and escalated to the preceptor, who called a rapid response.

Core rotations

  • Prepared and gave [oral, subcutaneous and IM] doses with my instructor at the bedside, calculating each dose myself first.
  • Built [8] care plans around NANDA-I diagnoses, taking each through assessment, planning and evaluation (ADPIE).
  • Scored fall and pressure-injury risk with the Morse and Braden scales for every assigned patient.

Nurse extern, student nurse technician or CNA job

A paid job during school is real employment. List it under work experience with its own title, even if the scope was narrow.

  • Worked [24] hours a week as a student nurse technician on a [telemetry] unit while enrolled full time.
  • Took vitals and blood glucose checks for [10] to [12] patients a shift, reporting abnormal values to the assigned RN.
  • Completed [wound care and Foley catheter care] after competency validation by the unit educator.

Where BLS, ACLS and your skills go

Give certifications a short section of their own, below education. Write each one in full with the issuing body and expiry date so a recruiter doesn’t have to email you to check:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider, American Heart Association, expires [Month Year]
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Provider, American Heart Association, expires [Month Year]
  • [Certified Nursing Assistant, [State] Nurse Aide Registry, #[number]], if you hold it

List ACLS only if you hold it or have a course booked. Many new grads don’t have it, and hospitals often set their own timing. One Defense Department RN posting we read asked for ACLS within six months of employment. A PALS card belongs on the page when you’re applying to pediatric units. If a course is booked, write “ACLS Provider course scheduled [Month Year]”.

For skills, skip “compassionate” and “team player” and name what screeners search for: head-to-toe assessment, medication administration, SBAR handoff, the EHR you charted in (Epic, Cerner), and assessment tools such as the Braden Scale and Glasgow Coma Scale. Match the wording to the posting. Our guide to writing a resume with no experience covers how to turn coursework and projects into skills that hold up.

A new grad nurse summary that answers the first questions

Three lines are enough. Line one is license status and degree. Line two is your strongest clinical evidence. Line three is the unit you want and when you can start.

BeforeCompassionate and dedicated new graduate nurse eager to begin my nursing career and make a difference in patients’ lives.
AfterNCLEX-RN passed [July 2026], [Texas] RN license pending. [CCNE]-accredited BSN with [540] clinical hours, including a [144]-hour med-surg capstone carrying [5] patients under an RN preceptor. Seeking a [medical-surgical] nurse residency starting [September 2026]; BLS certified.

Residency programs recruit in cohorts tied to graduation dates, so the start date isn’t filler. It tells the reader which cohort you fit. For more on the format, see how to write a resume summary.

What to leave off a new grad RN resume

  • “RN” after your name, or a license number, before the license is issued
  • “Independently managed”, “delegated” or “led the team” for work done as a student
  • Skills you only watched or practiced on a simulation manikin, unless labeled as simulation
  • Patient details, or unit stories that could identify anyone
  • A GPA below the posting’s cutoff, or high school jobs and awards
  • An objective that says you want to “make a difference” without naming a unit

Common questions

Should a new grad nurse resume be one page?

Yes, in almost every case. Education, a clinical experience section, one paid job and certifications fit on one page. A second page usually means every rotation has too many bullets.

Can I apply before I pass the NCLEX?

Yes. Many new grad residencies recruit before graduation. Write “NCLEX-RN scheduled [Month Year]” in line one so the reader knows your timeline. If you haven’t booked a date yet, give the month you plan to sit it.

Should I include my CNA or retail job?

Include a CNA, patient care tech or extern job with bullets, because it’s direct patient care. A retail or restaurant job can stay as one line with the dates. It shows you held a job while in school, but don’t give it the space your capstone needs.

Do I list every clinical rotation?

List every rotation as one line with its hours, since the total tells the reader how broad your training was. Add bullets only under the two or three that match the job, starting with your capstone.

What is the difference between a new grad resume and a nursing student resume?

A student resume targets externships and leads with the program in progress. A new grad resume targets RN residencies and first RN jobs, so it leads with license status and uses the capstone as its main evidence.
